A recent report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 90% of Americans eat more sodium than is recommended for a healthy diet. Too much sodium increases a person's risk for high blood pressure. High blood pressure often leads to heart disease, stroke, and other vascular diseases. What can you do about it? The study also shows that 40% of the sodium in a typical diet comes from just 10 foods. They are: breads and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats such as deli or packaged ham or turkey, pizza, fresh and processed poultry, soups, sandwiches such as cheeseburgers, cheese, pasta dishes*, meat mixed dishes such as meat loaf with tomato sauce, and snacks such as chips, pretzels, and popcorn. While you don't need to stop eating all of these foods, you should know that 65% of the sodium consumed comes from food bought at retail stores. Home prepared foods are usually lower in sodium and you can easily control the amount of sodium in foods you prepare yourself. When you do purchase prepared foods you should check labels to compare the sodium content of your food choices and ask for lower sodium options when dining out.
